Memory care training helps staff better understand dementia, improve communication and create meaningful daily experiences for residents. Across communities owned and/or managed by Cassia, this training is strengthening care, programming and quality of life for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
Supporting individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia is rooted in compassion, strengthened by training and guided by a deep understanding of each resident’s experience.
Across Cassia communities, team members are building on that foundation through specialized training focused on person-centered programming, communication and engagement.
Team members at communities like Meadowview of Johnston, Emerald Crest Shakopee and Trinity Springs are applying what they’ve learned in meaningful ways that enhance daily life for residents.
A Consistent Approach With Real-World Application
While each community serves residents in its own unique way, Cassia’s memory care training provides a consistent foundation through virtual learning and hands-on, in-person collaboration.
“The in-person day felt like a resource hub where we were able to explore tools, ideas and practical applications in a more hands-on and collaborative way,” says Jasmine from Trinity Springs. “It created a space not just to learn, but to really think about how to apply these concepts within our own communities.”
That emphasis on application is key. Staff aren’t just learning concepts—they’re actively translating them into improved care, programming and resident interactions.
What Memory Care Training Helps Staff Do
Memory care training equips staff to:
- Understand how dementia affects behavior and communication
- Adapt care approaches to each resident’s abilities
- Reduce behavioral expressions through proactive strategies
- Create meaningful, person-centered activities
- Improve daily experiences for residents and families
Shifting Perspectives to Meet Residents Where They Are
One of the most impactful aspects of the training across participating memory care programming staff was a shift in perspective. Staff gained a deeper understanding of how dementia affects each individual differently and how care must adapt accordingly.
“Reviewing the types of Alzheimer’s and their characteristics helps me be able to identify not only for myself but other staff and family members where someone is at in their journey and what abilities they have currently and honoring and adapting to what they can do at the current stage,” says Sydney from Meadowview of Johnston.
At Emerald Crest Shakopee, this perspective translates directly into how activities are designed.
“I learned how to design a flexible activity calendar that offers options and alternatives to support residents with diverse interests and abilities, while ensuring our programming addresses physical, cognitive, social, sensory and emotional needs,” says Annie.
Together, these insights reinforce a core principle: effective memory care starts by meeting residents where they are today.
Purposeful Programming That Goes Beyond Activities
Across communities, the training reinforced that memory care programming is not about filling time—it’s about creating meaningful experiences.
“I believe that I work in their home and I want their engagement in activities to give them fulfillment and purpose, not just being a filler of time to make their day go by,” Sydney says. “Programming isn’t about keeping them busy, but being able to continue on their life and keep writing their story.”
That same philosophy emerged at Trinity Springs, where programming is viewed holistically.
“It really expanded the way I think about programming, not just as individual activities, but as experiences throughout the day,” Jasmine says. “It encouraged me to be even more creative in how I design those experiences, making sure they feel engaging, familiar and emotionally supportive for residents.”
At Emerald Crest Shakopee, purposeful programming is rooted in knowing each resident personally.
“It is very important to me to take the time to truly get to know each resident and learn about their life story,” Annie says. “This understanding allows me to plan activities that are meaningful and personally fulfilling.”
Building Confidence and Strengthening Teams
In addition to improving resident experiences, the training has had a meaningful impact on staff confidence and collaboration.
“This training gave me confidence in my approach and reaffirmed the importance of offering meaningful, person-centered activities that help memory care residents feel engaged and valued,” Annie says.
Staff also found value in learning alongside peers from other communities.
“Just being around like-minded people who are doing what you do each day is helpful,” Sydney says. “The supportive environment of learning, ‘Oh, so I am not the only one who experiences that or struggles with that,’ is what was so helpful to me.”
This shared learning environment builds stronger teams and helps caregivers feel supported in the important work they do every day.
Enhancing Quality of Life for Residents and Families
The impact of the training is visible not only in daily programming, but in how residents feel and how families see their loved ones engaging and thriving.
“Both families and staff have shared that they enjoy seeing their loved ones and residents more engaged, active and involved,” Jasmine says. “It’s been encouraging to hear that the programming is making a noticeable difference in their daily experience.”
At Emerald Crest Shakopee, creative programming has led to more engaging, shareable moments for residents and their families, including themed events and photo opportunities, such as a visit from an inflatable Bunny for Easter.
a“Families expressed gratitude for the photos of their loved ones with the Easter Bunny and shared how meaningful it was to see them smiling, engaged and enjoying the experience,” Annie says.
When staff feel empowered and programming is intentional, the result is a more connected, supportive environment for everyone.
A Commitment to Continuous Improvement
These trainings reflect Cassia’s broader commitment to investing in its people and continuously improving the care provided across all communities.
“It has strengthened my knowledge and skills and directly supported my ability to develop more meaningful, purposeful programming for my memory care residents,” Annie says.
Across Meadowview of Johnston, Emerald Crest Shakopee, Trinity Springs and beyond, one theme is clear: when staff are equipped with the right tools and knowledge, they create experiences that support dignity, connection and quality of life.
